Granite And Quartz Are Currently Two Of The Most Popular Materials For Decoration

Granite and quartz are currently two of the most popular materials for use as counters. Granite, a natural stone, has been the standard for ages. Quartz counters have come into their own during the past few decades in the form of engineered stone. There are similarities and differences that may affect your choice: So, which one should you choose?

Granite is found in nature, having formed from volcanic origins. Its appearance varies greatly, with colors and patterns depending on the random placement and mix of minerals that were included during its formation. There are hundreds of colors and patterns available with granite. No two pieces of granite look precisely the same, and a single piece may vary greatly in different areas.

Engineered stone is manufactured with 93% quartz, along with polymer resins and pigment for color. The patterns vary only by the size of the ground up quartz crystals in the mix, and the color is determined by the pigment that is chosen. The potential color pallet is virtually unlimited. Quartz counters are much more uniform in appearance and you could have several counters that match precisely.

Granite is porous, which would provide a place for microbes to hide, and would also make it easy to stain. For this reason, it is standard practice for installers to seal the surface. Re-sealing granite surfaces needs to be done every year or two. This is not a difficult process. You can have this done professionally, or you can safely do it yourself. The sealing results in a stain resistant surface that is also resistant to harboring microbes and mildew.

Quartz counters are non-porous, because of the resins used in the manufacturing process. This makes them stain resistant, and also deprives microbes of the opportunity to hide.

Granite is slightly harder than engineered stone, but both are considered to be scratch resistant. However, it is still possible to scratch them, so it is recommended that you always use a cutting board rather than using a knife directly on a granite or Quartz counter surface.

Both granite and Quartz counters are heat resistant, but they can be damaged. Never place hot pots or pans directly on the surface. You should always use a trivet, potholder, or rack to protect the surface.

Pricewise, granite and quartz are competitive. The cost of granite varies with the source, shipping, and local competition. It could be higher or lower than engineered stone. You'll just have to check out your local market.

Back to the question, "which one should you choose?"

Both properly sealed granite, and quartz counters are durable, hygienic, and are relatively maintenance free. The greatest difference between them is their appearance. Do you prefer the randomness and variety of granite, or the uniform consistency of engineered stone? There is no wrong answer. The right choice is the one you like best.
